The Flat Nines is a collaboration between Portland musicians Melissa Carroll and Tommy Houston. The project began in 2014 and has grown over time to encompass several genres and styles. They have featured many appearances from local Portland artists and special guests. The Flat Nines’ sound has been described as a tight unit with soulful expressions and crowd-pleasing ambience. They are currently exploring funk, groove, and dance music with instrumentals and vocals. They have been influenced by 1960s and 1970s jazz funk. The Flat Nines write and play their own music in addition to choice covers.
